President: Turkmen military doctrine is of defensive nature

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov noted "purely defensive nature of military doctrine" at the meeting of the Stare Council for Security, the Turkmen government said on Saturday.

"Turkmenistan, steadily carrying out policy based on steadily followed principles of positive neutrality, opposes use of military force and never considers these actions as a way of settling conflicts," the newspaper quoted the president as saying.

The head of the state noted "need to create modern defense system fully meeting requirements of the present time".

He said to these ends work on further strengthening of material and technical basis of the National army, naval forces, anti-aircraft defence forces, military and law enforcement authorities will continue in 2012.

Improvement of social conditions of life of the servicemen and members of their families will remain one of the key areas of the military reform.

"The government will never spare funds to these ends and will give as much as required," Mr Berdymuhamedov said who is also Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

In this regard it was noted that 4 times more money was allocated to improve living conditions of servicemen and their families during last five years compared to the previous period.

The Turkmen military doctrine is elaborated taking into account the country's neutral status and foreign policy.
