International forum on refugee problems opens in Ashgabat

A two-day international conference "Refugees in the Muslim world" at the level of foreign ministers of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) opened in Ashgabat on Thursday.

A two-day international conference "Refugees in the Muslim world" at the level of foreign ministers of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) opened in Ashgabat on Thursday.

As a press release of the conference organizing committee says, it is attended by over 500 representatives from all OIC member countries.

The OIC (formerly the Organization of Islamic Conference) is the largest Muslim governmental international organization, which includes 57 countries with a population of about 1.2 billion people. The headquarters of the organization is located in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

The Ashgabat forum will be also attended by 40 international and regional organizations, as well as observers from 21 countries. They include delegations from the U.S., Russian Federation, China, Australia, EU and other countries.

Following the conference the Ashgabat Declaration and Action Plan on Refugees in the Muslim world will be adopted.

The agenda of the forum envisages holding another session on experience of Turkmenistan. Last year, by a decree of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov 3,318 stateless persons residing in the country received Turkmen citizenship.
