Latvia attaches importance to Turkmen visit

Latvian President Andris Berzins has met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, who arrived in Riga on an official visit, and stressed that "Latvia attaches great importance to this visit to facilitate the further development of bilateral relations," the Turkmen government said on Wednesday.

Latvian President Andris Berzins has met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, who arrived in Riga on an official visit, and stressed that "Latvia attaches great importance to this visit to facilitate the further development of bilateral relations," the Turkmen government said on Wednesday.

The 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries will be marked next year. Berdymuhamedov's visit takes place on September 11-12.

Berzins stressed Latvia's interest in enhancing cooperation with Turkmenistan, noting the importance of the intergovernmental commission, which held its first meeting in Riga.
A promising direction of partnership is the interaction in the industrial sector and modernizing infrastructure. In particular, Latvian President outlined the textile industry as well as agriculture as the areas of mutual interest.

The willingness of the Latvian side to share experiences in the development of ports and logistics was also announced.

Berdymuhamedov in turn, said that Ashgabat considers Latvia, one of the active members of the European Union, as a reliable partner in the context of the expansion of the Turkmen-cooperation with Europe.

"Turkmenistan and Latvia have a favorable geographical position, which contributes to the development and implementation of international projects for the development of trade and transport routes linking the major regions of the world." The Turkmen leader said.

The possibilities of cooperation in the formation of transport infrastructure, and in particular in the construction of ports were discussed at the talks in Riga. Turkmen leader expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit Riga free port.
