Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov at a recent government meeting in Ashgabat said that his country is a supporter of resolving the Caspian problem based on universally recognised norms of international law, local TV reported on Friday.
"Turkmenistan stands for addressing the Caspian problems exclusively by diplomatic means based on universally recognised norms of international law, mutual respect and taking into account the interests of partners," Turkmen leader said.
He said that the conservation of ecological well-being, biodiversity and the sustainable use of rich natural resources of the Caspian Sea are among the priorities of state policy.
Berdimuhammadov emphasised that Turkmenistan is committed to finding the best option of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea as a base document to regulate the relationship between the littoral states and create a legal basis for fruitful international cooperation.
On Dec.17-18 Ashgabat hosted a regular meeting of the special group on the development of a draft convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the Caspian littoral states which are Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
Participants expressed interest in the rapid completion of the work on the final text of the document.
