Registration of candidates for parliamentary elections completed in Turkmenistan

Less than two weeks before the scheduled date of the important social and political event in Turkmenistan, the elections of MPs, the Turkmen Central Commission for Elections and Referendums said today.

According to the report, the elections will be held in constituency No 7 in Ashgabat, No 25 in the Akhal region, No 83 and No 89 in Lebap region and No 103 in the Mary region.
'The candidate nomination procedure took place amid a high voter turnout', a statement said. In general, around 13 candidates were nominated.

Some candidates fall to each mandate in all the above-mentioned constituencies. This will provide the election campaign with a wide alternative and transparent viewpoint in the actual elections.

According to the national legislation, equal opportunities were created for candidates to meet with voters and to deliver speeches at election meetings, conferences and the mass media.

Currently candidates and their assistants meet with voters and inform them about the provisions of their election programmes.

The term of office of deputies of the Majlis shall be five years. The current parliamentary staff was elected in December 2008.

According to the Turkmen constitution, parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution of Turkmenistan; examines the state budget approval and addresses questions on holding referendums.

It also announces presidential and parliamentary elections, considers issues on the appointment and dismissal of the chief of the Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice.
