Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Mukhisa Kituyi met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat city, the country’s government said in a message Nov. 15.
Turkmenistan has achieved great success in implementing the country’s industrialization programs, Kituyi said.
The UN is deeply interested in the further development of partnership with Turkmenistan, he noted, adding that Turkmenistan has huge oil and gas reserves.
In addition, it was noted that the UN sees Turkmenistan as a reliable and responsible partner and highly appreciates active position of Ashgabat in strengthening regional and international cooperation.
The message said that a memorandum was signed in Ashgabat between the government of Turkmenistan and the UNCTAD. Priorities of interaction between Turkmenistan and the UN were identified - investment promotion, modernization of customs service, transport and logistics, assistance in studying the issue of Turkmenistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.
According to BP, the country’s recoverable reserves are estimated at 17.5 trillion cubic meters of gas or nine percent of total global reserves, which puts Turkmenistan on the fourth position after Iran, Russia and Qatar.
Turkmenistan supplies gas to China and Iran. Turkmenistan is diversifying its economy, developing the textile and oil products industry, actively developing oil and gas chemical industries and the industry for the production of construction materials.
