Trade turnover between Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan grows sharply

Uzbekistan's foreign trade turnover with Turkmenistan reached $491.4 million from January through September 2021, an increase of 22.1 percent year on year, Trend reports referring to Business Turkmenistan.

According to the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan, for the same period last year, trade turnover between neighboring countries amounted to more than $382.8 million. Turkmenistan is one of the ten largest trade partners of Uzbekistan.

In the first 9 months of this year, Uzbekistan imported Turkmen products worth $354.5 million. At the same time, the country's exports to Turkmenistan amounted to $136.9 million.

The total foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan for this period exceeded $28.2 billion, an increase of $680.4 million, or 2.5 percent compared to the same period of 2020.

The largest foreign trade partner of Uzbekistan during this period was China (almost $5.4 billion), while exports approached $1.8 billion and imports approached $3.6 billion.

Other main partners of Uzbekistan in terms of trade during this period were Russia (over $5.1 billion), Kazakhstan (over $2.8 billion), Turkey (over $2.43 billion), the Republic of Korea (about $1.37 billion), Kyrgyzstan (almost $682 million), Germany (more than $560 million), Afghanistan (almost $489 million) and Ukraine ($451 million).

The Uzbek-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission on Trade-Economic, Scientific-Technical, and Cultural-Humanitarian Cooperation, during its 16th meeting in Tashkent in September this year, expressed its readiness to bring the volume of Uzbek-Turkmen trade to $1 billion in the near future.

In 2020, the trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan amounted to $527 million.
