BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 27. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has provided and will continue to provide assistance to Turkmenistan in joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), a source in the UNECE told Trend.

It was noted that at the moment the UNECE and the Turkmen government are preparing a project to study regulatory and procedural barriers to trade and innovation in the country, as well as to assess Turkmenistan's readiness to apply the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation.

"The UNECE has twice helped high-ranking politicians from Turkmenistan to meet with the Director General of the WTO and discuss the country's accession to the organization. The result was that in the summer of 2020, Turkmenistan applied and became observer to the WTO," the organization said.

The organization added that Turkmenistan applied in November 2021 for full-fledged membership of WTO and the UNECE was the first international organization to set up an international capacity-building seminar for Turkmenistan officials on the accession process in March 2022.

"Together with the Accession Division of WTO, from May 11 through 13, 2016, we organized a regional Trade Policy Forum of the SPECA countries in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), where the UNECE and WTO secretariats, together with policymakers from the neighboring countries provided advice to policymakers from Turkmenistan on the benefits and details of the World Trade Organization accession process," the UNECE said.
