Leaders of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Border Services Hold Negotiations

Uzbekistan, Tashkent, 14 October / corr. Trend T.Zhukov / Delegation of the Uzbekistan National Security Service Committee on Protection of State Borders visited Turkmenistan. The visit was held at invitation of the Turkmenistan State Border Service, the committee told Trend .

"The leaders of border services confirmed in Ashkhabad their intentions to extend cooperation in protection of their countries' borders, which is carried out within the earlier achieved interstate and intergovernmental agreements. The papers aimed at intensification of interaction between the border services on lower level (the servicemen directly protecting the state borders) were signed," Committee said.

"Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan state border remains the border of friendship, uniting brotherly nations of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan," according to official statement. "Stable system of interaction, enabling successful solving of any issues at state borders on the basis of friendship, good-neighbourly relations and mutual understanding, formed between frontier guards of the two countries".

The length of the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan border totals 1,621,000km. About 70% of the border passes along the delta of the Amu Darya river. In accordance with bilateral agreement, demarcation of most part of the border was held through a Russian satellite.

In November 2004, agreement on regulation of all disputable border issues was reached during Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan summit in Bukhara. In accordance with bilateral agreement on cooperation between boundary territories of the two countries, residents of 12 regions of Uzbekistan have the right of simplified passage to Turkmenistan. Two boundary regions of Turkmenistan enjoy the same privileges.
