Uzbekistan, OSCE discuss issues of ethnic policy

The High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Knut Vollebaek, held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, press service of the Ministry said on Wednesday.

The High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Knut Vollebaek, held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, press service of the Ministry said on Wednesday.

OSCE project coordinator in Uzbekistan Gyorgy Szabo also attended the meeting.

During the meeting the parties stressed that inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony is the foundation for building a democratic, constitutional state with a developed system of independent, stable, representing interests of different social groups and the general population non-governmental organizations, independent media and other institutions of society.

The sides noted that today more than 140 national cultural centers in Uzbekistan contribute to meeting the growing national and spiritual needs of citizens, contribute to the harmonization of interethnic relations, strengthening of peace, friendship and harmony in the country.

The sides also considered at the meeting international and regional aspects of the issues discussed.

Uzbekistan cooperates with the OSCE in such areas as strengthening of regional security and stability, development of civil society, expansion of international economic and humanitarian partnership, and ecology.
