Uzbekistan modernizes Sifat centre for certification of cotton fiber

A decree of the Uzbek Cabinet of Ministers has approved the modernization and technological re-certification program of the Uzbek Sifat Centre for certification of cotton fiber in 2013-2017 in order to develop a national system of cotton fiber certification that meets international standards, ensuring integration into the international system of testing and improving the competitiveness of Uzbek cotton.

A decree of the Uzbek Cabinet of Ministers has approved the modernization and technological re-certification program of the Uzbek Sifat Centre for certification of cotton fiber in 2013-2017 in order to develop a national system of cotton fiber certification that meets international standards, ensuring integration into the international system of testing and improving the competitiveness of Uzbek cotton.

The program provides for the technological re-equipment of a national system for assessing cotton fiber quality by high-performance automation HVI systems and equipment meeting international technical parameters.

According to the document, Uzbekistan will allocate 5.908 million to implementation of the program between 2013 and 2017. The program will be financed through the Sifat Centre's own funds received from certifications and cotton weighing services.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth in terms of production in the world and third in terms of cotton fiber exports. Uzbekistan annually produces about 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1.0-1.2 million tons of cotton fiber. More than 75 percent of produced cotton is exported.

As it was reported by Trend, in 2012, Uzbekistan collected 3.35 million tons of raw cotton compared to 3.5 million tons in the previous year, cotton production declined by 0.6 percent to 1.095 million tons.
