MPs to be elected at conference of Uzbekistan’s Ecological Movement

A conference of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan started in Tashkent to elect the candidates for members of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic.

The delegates from the Karakalpak republican, regional and Tashkent city territorial offices of the Environmental Movement, representatives of the Central Election Commission, foreign and local observers, media representatives attend the conference.

It was earlier reported that around 15 members of the Legislative Chamber are elected from the Ecological Movement in accordance with the amendments to the electoral legislation of Uzbekistan, adopted in December 2008. Uzbekistan became the first country which introduced this procedure among the countries of Central Asia.

For the first time, around 15 MPs' seats in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis were granted to the MPs from the Ecological Movement in the elections of 2009. Over the past period, the MPs elected from this movement put forward various initiatives to protect the environment and to resolve the environmental issues.

Around 25 delegates from each territorial office of the Environmental Movement were elected by secret ballot at the conference from October 11 to November 15, 2014. Around 15 MPs will be elected among 350 delegates on a competitive basis by secret ballot at a conference.
