Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev intends to take part in the next session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), to be held in September 2017 in New York.
Mirziyoyev expressed his intention in a message to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of 25th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s joining the UN that is marked on March 2.
The message also says that the membership at the United Nations gave Uzbekistan an opportunity to participate more actively and promote peace agenda, development and cooperation, to address a number of global and regional issues of our time at the global level.
Mirziyoyev received UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca on March 2. During the meeting, the president affirmed Uzbekistan’s commitment to the strengthening of partnership relations with the UN and its organizations.
The Uzbek president also called on the UN to take part more actively in ongoing development processes in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.
The UN General Assembly holds annual sessions and the next – 71st – session will be held in September 2017.
Last time, Uzbekistan was represented at the UN General Assembly session by the country’s former president in 2010. Then, the country’s first President Islam Karimov delivered a speech at the UN summit on Millennium Development Goals.
