FAO to assist Uzbekistan in increasing productive capacity of potato growing

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will help restore and develop the potato growing in Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to FAO.

According to the information, the project worth $195,000 will be implemented in 2021-2023.

The Deputy FAO Representative in Uzbekistan Sherzod Umarov said that the main goal of the project is to increase the production potential of potato growing.

"This will be achieved by improving the system of registering potato varieties and seed certification, improving research in the field of modernizing potato production, developing high-quality potato production and improving its storage conditions," he said.

It was noted that in Central Asia, potatoes are the key crop with the greatest potential for food security and income generation. It deserves the title of "second bread" with an annual per capita consumption of 52.6 kilograms.

In addition, the implementation of the project will contribute to the development of a sustainable potato production system based on international best practices. Improved potato variety registration and seed certification systems will provide farmers with access to quality potato seeds.

Also, it is reported that the training workshops planned under the project will increase the capacity of extension services for farmers and seed certification specialists who will advise farmers on improved potato growing techniques, new ways of protecting against pests and diseases to further improve the potato sector in Uzbekistan.
