Russia, Uzbekistan approve text of space co-op agreement

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr.12

Trend:

The authorities of Russia and Uzbekistan have approved the text of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in space for peaceful purposes, said Russian Ambassador to the country Oleg Malginov, Trend reports.

"Recently, the parties have approved the text of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the peaceful-aimed exploration and use of outer space," Malginov said.

He expressed the hope that the agreement could be signed during the forthcoming visit of Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Russia this year.

The diplomat also said that the parties continue to work on a project to build a joint ‘Suffa’ radio astronomy observatory in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan.

"It’s planned to equip the observatory with the largest radio telescope, allowing for advanced scientific researches," added Malginov.

In 1995, the governments of the two countries signed an agreement to establish an international radio astronomy observatory on the Suffa plateau, 250 kilometers from Tashkent. The main part of the observatory - a unique radio telescope with a mirror diameter of 70 meters - was planned to be put into operation in 2009. However, since then the observatory hasn’t been completed, which was caused by funding problems.
