Uzbekistan reveals number of projects to be implemented in free economic zones

Uzbekistan this year plans to implement 332 projects worth $1.1 billion in the FEZ (free economic zones) and 1,800 projects worth 9.5 trillion soums ($901 million) in SIZ (small industrial zones), Trend reports referring to the press service of the president of Uzbekistan.

President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held a meeting to discuss investment projects being implemented in free economic and small industrial zones.

Today there are 23 free economic and 348 small industrial zones operating in Uzbekistan. The FEZ has implemented 453 projects totaling $2.6 billion and created about 36,000 jobs. The SIZ implemented 1,497 projects with a total cost of five trillion soums ($474 million), provided employment for more than 36,000 people.

It is reported that the head of state signed a decree on measures for the further development of the engineering and communication infrastructure of special economic and small industrial zones. According to the document, this year 1.6 trillion soums ($151.7 million) will be allocated to improve the infrastructure of the FEZ and SIZ.

In particular, 584 billion soums ($55.4 million) will be allocated for the construction of electricity, gas and water supply, sewerage, and roads in 17 FEZ, another 395 billion soums ($37.5 million) will be allocated for the development of 145 SIZ.

The provision of infrastructure for large investment projects provides for the allocation of 232 billion soums ($22 million). Some 264 billion soums ($25 million) will be allocated for the accelerated development of industry and business in 33 underdeveloped regions.
