BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. Uzbekistan and Russia continue to work within an agreement of joint development of nuclear energy projects, Trend reports.
"The progress of our work may be slightly slower than anticipated due to our meticulous approach of examining all aspects, reconciling details, and mitigating potential risks. Concurrently, we are actively exploring the latest advancements in small modular reactors, which have gained significant popularity," Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, Uzbek Energy Minister, said.
According to the minister, constructing a nuclear power plant is a substantial commitment for the state, encompassing financial considerations and various other factors.
"Hence, our current focus primarily lies in expediting the development of renewable energy sources to address the existing energy shortage. However, we have not disregarded the construction of a nuclear power plant; rather, we continue to study technologies, train personnel, and engage in negotiations with partners. Our objective is to minimize any associated risks as we move forward," he added.
Recently, Russian MFA reported that the main terms of the general contract on the construction of a nuclear power plant of Russian design in Uzbekistan will be agreed upon soon.
In 2018, Uzbekistan and Russia signed an agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant near Tuzkan Lake in the Jizzakh region.
