TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, April 19. Uzbekistan’s coal production reached 6.1 million tons in 2023, Trend reports.
The data from Uzbekistan's Statistics Agency shows this figure has increased by 15 percent year-on-year (5.3 million tons in 2022).
The production of coal continued to increase compared to previous years. Thus, coal production amounted to 5 million tons in 2021 and 4.1 million tons in 2020. In addition, this indicator fell to 4 million tons in 2019.
Uzbekistan’s coal production volume totaled 24.5 million tons during 2019–2023.
Meanwhile, the country produced 659,000 tons of coal from January through February 2024, which is less than 3.3 percent year-on-year (682,000 tons).
Furthermore, Uzbekistan plans to start operating a new coal mine with 900,000 tons of reserves at the Shargun deposit in its Surkhandarya region.
The country intends to enhance coal extraction in the region by 2 million tons in reaction to this discovery.
