( Fars News Agency) - Iran said drug plantation and production has increased to 8,000 tons in Afghanistan since the deployment of the US troops in that country, adding that the US ignores the issue of illicit drugs under the pretext of campaign against terrorism.
Head of Iran's anti-drug headquarters General Esmayeel Ahmadi Moghaddam told a meeting of the Muslim countries' diplomatic corps in Tehran Sunday night that the US is overemphasizing the campaign against terrorism at the expense of the campaign against illicit drugs, while drug trafficking provides terrorists with giant financial resources.
Elsewhere, he noted Iran's geopolitical position, and said that the country is located on the transit route of drug traffickers.
"Therefore, drugs pose a greater threat to Iran than other countries," Ahmadi Moghaddam , who is also commander of Iran's Law Enforcement Police, added.
"Yet, we do not suffice to protect our own country from the import of this evil material, rather preventing the transfer of illicit drugs to other countries sets a top agenda for us," he underlined.
To conclude his words, the General called on all Islamic states to start a new drug campaign, and voiced Iran's preparedness to boost and expand cooperation with Islamic countries to fight against drug trafficking.
