Iran Materials 21 November 2007 16:53 (UTC +04:00)

( RIA Novosti ) - Iranian officials announced on Wednesday that the country's top nuclear negotiator will meet with the European Union's foreign policy chief for a new round of talks next week.

The announcement came from sources in the Supreme National Security Council, headed by nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.

However, Iranian authorities said a planned meeting between deputies of Jalili and Salana had been postponed for several days for "technical reasons."

Iran's deputy chief nuclear negotiator Javad Vaeedi and Robert Cooper, EU director of external relations, were set to meet in Vienna on Wednesday for preliminary talks.

The sides will discuss Iran's uranium enrichment, which most Western countries suspect is a cover for the production of nuclear weapons.

Despite Iran's insistence that the program has purely peaceful purposes, the country is currently subject to two sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.
