Germany demanded an explanation from the ambassador of Iran concerning the final results of presidential elections held in Iran on Friday, Al Jazeera said.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday said that "action against candidate-reformist Mir-Hossein Mousavi was barbaric." Massive protests have been held in Iran following the announcement of election results.

Steinmeier said in an interview with German television: "We are very concerned about the situation in Tehran, as we have data on the numerous violations of the elections", adding that Germany condemns the measures taken against the protesters, "they are unacceptable."

In an official statement on Saturday, the European Union expressed concern regarding the results of the elections in Iran, as well as suppression of protests of citizens.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Franco Frattini called on European countries to "take measures to ensure transparency of the election results, and protect the rights of the Iranian people."
