Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said on Friday that Brazil did the right thing by working toward an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program impasse, Xinhua reported.
"We are not nervous, because we are sure that we did the right thing," Amorim said here during the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Forum.
Amorim said neither Brazil nor Turkey acted irresponsibly by signing an agreement with Iran, adding the terms of the deal were discussed with several countries, including the United States.
Iran signed an accord with Turkey and Brazil in Tehran on May 17 under which it will ship most of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for the 20-percent uranium fuel needed for its Tehran reactor.
The Brazilian minister preferred not to comment on the statement made earlier this week by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who defended sanctions on Iran and said Thursday that the diplomatic actions on the Iranian nuclear issue left the world unsafe.
Amorim stressed that the disagreement on the Iranian nuclear program would not affect the Brazilian-U.S. relations.
When asked about whether Brazil's stance would affect its plea for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, Amorim said if Brazil needed to be subservient in order to get a permanent seat, it was better not to take part in the Council.
