Foreign Policy Adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Akbar Velayati met with head of the Hamas movement Khaled Mashaal during his visit to Syria Aug. 8, the Xinhua news agency reported. Velayati and Mashaal discussed Palestine and Palestinian national reconciliation.
"We exchanged our views on regional affairs and Israeli and U.S. threats," he said. "The future is resistance and steadfastness. We are capable of facing all challenges."
A source close to Hamas told Xinhua that the talks were held in a "constructive atmosphere."
Velayati also met with Palestinian Islamic Jihad Secretary General Abdullah Shalah.
The officials discussed Palestinian-Israeli direct negotiations and conflicts between the Lebanese army and Israeli troops in border areas.
Velayati arrived in Syria Saturday to discuss regional developments with Syrian and Palestinian officials. Earlier, he visited Lebanon and discussed the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East with Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.
