Defense Minister: Iran bomb attacks show enemy despair

Iran Materials 1 December 2010 00:38 (UTC +04:00)

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says the assassination of the Iranian scientific elite is a sign of the enemies' "utmost helplessness", Press TV reported.

On Monday, Dr. Majid Shahriari was assassinated and Dr. Fereydoun Abbasi sustained injuries in two separate bomb attacks in Tehran.

"With this criminal act, [Iran's] enemies, once again, showed their defeat and humiliation against the will of the Iranian nation and their scientific advances," IRNA quoted Brigadier General Vahidi as saying in the Northern city of Mazandaran on Tuesday.

Unknown terrorists detonated bombs in the vehicles of Shahriari and Abbasi in separate locations on Monday morning between 7-8 a.m. local time [0330-0430 GMT].

The attack was condemned by Iranian officials and the parliament (Majlis) and enraged academics across the country.

Vahidi said the terrorist attacks were orchestrated by Israel and Western intelligence services, especially those of the US and the UK, and conducted by the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO), adding that international organizations and the so-called advocates of human rights are responsible for "this savage act."

The MKO is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community and is responsible for numerous acts of terror and violence against Iranian civilians and government officials.

The security and intelligence institutions of the Islamic Republic will firmly neutralize this evil move, Vahidi said, adding that the enemy cannot hinder Iran's scientific progress.
