ECO ministerial meeting opens in Istanbul with Salehi’s remarks

The 19th meeting of the Economic Cooperation Council's member states opened here Wednesday morning with remarks of Iran's Foreign Ministry Caretaker Ali-Akbar Salehi, IRNA reported. 

In his remarks as the rotating head of the body, Salehi congratulated Turkey for taking over the position as the next ECO chief.

Stressing the importance of the ECO for regional countries, he referred to many valuable services the organization has rendered in the past and said the present meeting would review the scheme of its future activities.

The ECO experts ended their two-day meeting Tuesday night during which they have prepared an agenda for the ministerial meeting.

The ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985. It includes Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan providing a platform to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.

ECO's secretariat and cultural departments are located in Tehran, its economic bureau is in Turkey and its scientific bureau is situated in Pakistan.
