Commander of the Army's Naval Forces Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari Monday underlined the importance of strengthening key military infrastructure in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman, Iran Daily reported.

"Construction, maintenance and rebuilding infrastructure on the southern coasts is important in boosting military capability," Fars News Agency quoted him as saying in a meeting with Navy commanders and managers of construction projects in Tehran.

He recalled the necessity of upholding safety codes in building and maintaining naval facilities.

"All naval units, particularly the engineering wings, which lay the foundations for a powerful military in any region, should work in cooperation and coordination to provide effective plans to achieve their goals," the commander asserted.

The remarks by Sayyari came weeks after the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei described the Navy as a "strategic force".
"Considering the world's geopolitical conditions, we [Iran] should strengthen our naval and coastal power as far as we can," Ayatollah Khamenei told Navy commanders in late November. The leader stressed that increasing manpower, recruiting talent and putting innovation and initiative into action are necessary for the future of the naval forces.

The army's naval forces as well as the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' (IRGC's) Navy units cooperate in securing Iran's territorial integrity and protecting the country's interests.

Iran's naval power has been acknowledged by foes.
