Iran to expand coastal missile systems

Iranian Navy Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Gholam-Reza Khadem Bigham says Iran's naval forces plan to expand the country's coastal missile defense systems, Press TV reported.

"Iran's Navy missile system is capable of protecting operation areas and points of coverage," Admiral Bigham said on Saturday.

"There are different ways to protect these areas... and we can use portable missile systems for enhancing the missile range," Fars News Agency quoted the Iranian commander as saying.

Admiral Bigham added that considering the expansive presence of Iran's Navy in the country's maritime borders and the need to enhance its missile capabilities, new systems of different kinds have been delivered to the naval force.

Bigham further explained that Iranian ships and naval combat fleets are equipped with missile systems, and Iran's Navy is trying to increase the operational range of new missile systems.

In recent years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

In January, Iran's Defense Ministry delivered new naval cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.

The Navy has successfully test-fired a range of powerful missiles mounted with laser technology, which display high precision and have a range of 45 km (28 miles) to 300 km (186 miles).

In 2010, Iran opened the lines for the Seraj high-speed vessel and a new generation of the high-speed Zolfaghar. The Iranian vessel is capable of launching missiles, and sailing at a speed of 70 knots (82 mph).

Tehran has repeatedly assured that its military might poses no threat to other countries, saying Tehran's defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
