Iran plans to increase its electricity production by 5000 megawatts (MW) this year and add 4000 kilometres to the breadth of its power transmission network said Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad, Mehr news agency reports.

Adding to the production capacity of small scale and dispersed power plants is part of this year's programme (Iran's solar year ended on March 19) with 600 MW in production, a capacity planned for dispersed production plants.

The government plans to focus on finishing projects that are about 70 per cent complete and predicts it will add 10,000 MW of hydro and thermal power to its operations by 2014.

Iran's total power production passed 65,000 MW last year.
