Phases 17 and 18 of Iran's joint South Pars oil and gas field will go into production early this fall.

When the two phases become fully operational, they will have the capacity to produce 12.5 million cubic meters (mcm) of rich gas daily along with 7,500 barrels of gas condensates, 400 tons of sulfur and 3,500 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports.

In total, about 81 percent of the work on the two phases has been finished. About 77 percent of the work was conducted by the refinery.

Two 110 kilometer long pipelines will carry sour and rich gas from offshore platforms to the land. They are scheduled to be finished in the next two months.

One of the world's largest gas fields, South Pars sits on the Iran-Qatar border. The two neighbors share the 9,700 square kilometer field. As Qatar has raced ahead in developing South Pars, Iran has been hampered by international sanctions and lack of funds. It is trying to speed up its South Pars operations to avoid losing any more of the field's resources to Qatar.

Iran plans that it will extract 29 billion cubic meters of gas a day from its 24 South Pars phases when they all become operational.
