President Ahmadinejad's visit to Azerbaijan for participation in ECO forum to pave way for greater cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic Foreign Ministry's spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at a press conference in Tehran, PRESS TV reported live.

Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Azerbaijan yesterday for participation in the Economic Cooperation Organization's (ECO) summit in Baku.

On the eve of the summit, Baku hosted a meeting of the ECO Council of Foreign Ministers, which discussed a meeting agenda of heads of states.

Foreign ministers of the ECO member states also worked on the draft Baku Declaration, to be adopted following the summit.

The Economic Cooperation Organization is a regional intergovernmental economic body established in 1985 by the countries of Central Asia and the Middle East and is the successor of the Regional Cooperation for Development which acted on the basis of the Charter - the Izmir Treaty, signed by three founding countries - Iran, Pakistan and Turkey on March 12, 1977.

Ramin Mehmanparast said that this kind of summit is important for all the regional countries, as it have enough capacity for cooperation between the nations.

"This summit provides good opportunities for greater cooperation. The Iran-Azerbaijan relations are very good, and they have capacity to develop and increase in all fields," Mehmanparast said.

"Some circles that are being orchestrated by the Zionist regime try to create tensions between the regional states, however all such attempts are doomed to fail," Mehmanparast noted.
