Iran has exported 6,624 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to neighboring countries since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2012) till October 23, showing a 44 percent rise compared to the same period of last year, IRIB reported.

By the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (March 2016), Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity by 25GW to reach 73GW, Energy Minister Majid Namjou said on February 7.

On September 30, Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad told the Mehr News Agency that Iran can earn up to $1.2 billion in electricity exports.

The country exported nearly 50 percent more electricity to neighboring countries in the first half of this year compared to the year before, he said.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
