There are approximately some 7 million of diabetics living in Iran, which is about 10 percent of the whole population in the country, President of Iran's Society for Support of diabetics Shakur Omidi said, IRNA reported.
He made the remarks In Iran, at today's meeting of the International Congress on occasion of marking the World Diabetes Day.
Omidi said however that those numbers are the official ones, and the actual number of diabetics in the country might be bigger, as some do not even suspect they have diabetes.
Omidi pointed out that every day stress from city life, and bad diets eventually lead to the development of diabetes.
Speaking of the Iranian provinces, Omidi noted that the worst situation is observed in country's Yazd province, where 23 percent of citizens have diabetes, and in the Qazvin province, where about 16 percent of people have the same problem.
At the same time, Omidi explained that diabetes is not a disease, but a limitation that can be controlled. In particular he said that following a strict healty diet and exercising could help to prolong diabetic's life.
