Iran's Presidential Candidate Ali Akbar Velayati thanked the Iranian nation for their high turnout in the 11th presidential election, ISNA reported.

In an open letter, the principlist candidate said that although the great responsibility was not put on his shoulders, he just did his duty.

He also thanked all the Iranian who voted in his favor, as well as the groups and individuals who supported him in the race.

Velayati further wished luck for the other candidates who he referred to as real servants of people and the Islamic Republic.

The 11th presidential elections have been officially held yesterday in Iran and 96 foreign countries.

Over 50 million Iranians were eligible to take part in Friday's polls.

Due to high amount of people willing to leave their votes for the candidates, the time of the elections was extended several times, before the final closure of the polls.

Currently the votes are being counted and Velayati is in the fifth place, after Hassan Rouhani, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Mohsen Rezaee, and Saeed Jalili.

Velayati was a member of the principlist Coalition of Three, along with Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and MP Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel. Haddad-Adel withdrew his presidency a few days befor the election.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. The Guardian Council has vetted the candidates for qualifications.
