One man charged of drug smuggling was hanged in the Iranian Ahvaz city prison of the Khuzestan province today morning, Mehr news agency reported.

Iranian court has sentenced him to death by hanging due to carrying 11 kilograms of heroin.

It should be recalled that, Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani had approved the regional court's sentence.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and the trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of five kilograms are among crimes punishable by death in Iran.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world. During the last 6 months, about 150 people were hanged in Iran in total.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometers of a common border with Afghanistan, through which about 74 percent of opium is smuggled.

According to official estimates, fight against drugs annually cost Iran about $1 billion. The statistics also say that there are about 2 million of drug users in Iran.
