Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has appointed Masoumeh Ebtekar as the new Head of Environmental Protection Organization of Iran, Fars news agency reported.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has appointed Masoumeh Ebtekar as the new Head of Environmental Protection Organization of Iran, Fars news agency reported.

Previously, Mohammad-Javad Mohammadizadeh held this post.

Masoumeh Ebtekar is an Iranian scientist, journalist and politician who was the first female Vice President of Iran.

After new appointment, Ebtekar again became country's vice president.

She is currently the director of Peace and Environment Center in Tehran.

Ebtekar first achieved fame as "Mary", the spokesperson of the students who took hostages and occupied the US Embassy in 1979.

Later she became the head of the Environment Protection Organization of Iran during the administration of President Mohammad Khatami, and was a city councilwoman of Tehran from 2007 to 2013.
