Iranian commander: Saudi Arabia is behind many regional conflicts

By Umid Niayesh- Trend:

"Saudi Arabia is responsible for a large part of the conflicts in the region, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri was quoted by Iran's Fars news agency on Jan. 16.

"The arrogant powers are attempting to make conflicts among Muslims in the region," he said, adding that "the purpose of their brutal actions is access to our resources".

Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia are experiencing a difficult time.

Saudi Arabia's concerns over Iran are mainly related to its plans of expanding influence to other parts of the Gulf region as well as a disagreement over Iran's nuclear program.

Both Saudi Arabia and Iran have aspirations to find them selves in leadership roles and the two countries are poles apart politically.

While Iran is supporting the Lebanese Shiaa Movement Hezbollah and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Saudi Arabia is a key supporter of the Syrian opposition.

Iranian former president and Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on January 9 that relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia are going to the worst period in history.

Rafsanjani is concerned by the increasing tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
