Tehran, Iran, Oct.14
Trend:
Iran offered to negotiate prisoners exchange with the United States two times during Trump's administration, but this yielded no results, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said, Trend reports citing IRIB.
“Prisoners exchange has happened several times before Mr. Trump's administration,” he said.
“During Mr. Trump's administration, the negotiations [on prisoners exchange] re-opened many times, but failed,” said Rouhani. He added that some new suggestions were made, but the US president put forward conditions, which lead to the failure of the negotiations again.
Referring to the types of the prisoners, the Iranian president noted that they were charged for different reasons.
“US prisoners in Iran were convicted for security crimes [like espionage], but our prisoners in America were convicted for bypassing sanctions,” Rouhani said. “They did a great job of circumventing the sanctions, because the US sanctions are inhumane.”
In April, Iran’s foreign minister offered publicly to negotiate prisoners exchange with the United States, saying he is authorized to conduct such talks.
