Iran denies early ban lift off importing rice into country

TEHRAN, Iran, Sept.13

Trend:

Iran Rice Importers Association has suggested the Ministry of Agriculture to halt the ban on import of rice into Iran by September 23, said the secretary of Iran Rice Importers Association Massih Keshavarz, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

Keshavarz indicated that early lift of rice imports would balance prices and help release the remaining imported rice stored at the ports, but the suggestion eventually wasn't approved.

Keshavarz noted that import of rice would not affect the domestic rice price to drop down, since the latter always has its consumers, but the import creates a specific psychological atmosphere, which prevents illogical increase of Iranian rice price.

Ira has imported about 250,000 tons of rice during first four months of the current Iranian year (started March 21,2021), which is a 50-percent decline compared to same time the last Iranian year (started March 20,2020).

"Although rice import in 2020 also had a 50-percent decline, compared to 2019, so rice import is not a threat to domestic production," he explained.
