BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 25. The exchange of electricity between the two countries will increase threefold with the construction and commissioning of a power transmission line between Iran and Turkmenistan, the Foreign Trade Office of Iran's state electricity company director Mehrdad Eglimi said, Trend reports.

According to him, the Turkmen delegation recently visited Iran to expand cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan in the electricity sector. Within the framework of the visit, the sides exchanged views on providing financial resources for the construction of the third power transmission line between the two countries.

Eghlimi stated that the Turkmen side held a tender for the construction of the third power transmission line, and an Iranian company was selected in the tender. Thus, a 155-kilometer-long power transmission line will be constructed from the Sarakhs district of Iran to Mari city in Turkmenistan within 2 years. The power transmission line mentioned from the Iranian side is ready.

“With the commissioning of the aforementioned power transmission line, the issue of the transit of Turkmen electricity to third countries through Iran's energy system will be put on the agenda of the two countries,” he noted.

To note, Iran's electricity generation potential in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024) was 92,841 megawatt-hours. Of this, 81.5 percent came from thermal power plants.
