Mahiroud border terminal in Iran seeing upsurge in transit movements

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 4. The transit from Mahiroud Border Terminal in South Khorasan Province, located in northeastern Iran, to Afghanistan has increased 11 times during 3 months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through June 2024) compared to the same period last year (from March 21 through June 21, 2023), deputy director general of Iran's South Khorasan Province Roads and Transportation Department Ali Akbar Mazidi said, Trend reports.

Over three months, he claims, circa 251,000 tons of goods were shipped from the Mahiroud border crossing to Afghanistan.

The official noted that these products were mainly spare parts for equipment, medicinal plants, flour, soybeans, fuel, and many others. These products were shipped to Afghanistan from the UAE, Türkiye, and Iraq.

"A total of 154,000 tons of products were exported to Afghanistan through the Mahiroud border terminal in 3 months. The exported products were mainly oil products and cement," he said.

To note, according to the statistics of the Iranian Customs Administration, 5.5 million tons of products were transited through Iran during 3 months. Transit increased by 55 percent compared to the same period last year.
