BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 14. Iran's nuclear activities are exclusively peaceful and are carried out within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iranian MP Mahmoud Nabavian said at the Standing Committee on Peace and Security of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva on October 14, Trend reports.
According to him, Iran is a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency within the framework of the agreement.
Nabavian added that in this context, 92 percent of the International Atomic Energy Agency's inspections have been carried out in Iran.
“Comparing the peaceful nuclear activities of Iran, a member of the nuclear non-proliferation agreement, with the nuclear activities of North Korea, which lies outside the agreement, is a wrong and unfair comparison,” he said.
The Iranian MP stated that the NPT has officially recognized the right of everyone to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and nothing can undermine this right. Iran's peaceful nuclear program poses no threat to human health or the environment.
Meanwhile, in January 2016, Iran and the P5+1 group (the US, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany) implemented the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
In May 2018, the US announced its withdrawal from the deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
By the end of 2020, the Iranian parliament decided to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector to counter the sanctions, leading to a suspension of additional steps and the Additional Protocol as per the nuclear agreement.
Consequently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) faced a reduction in monitoring capabilities by 20–30 percent.
