Iran, Iraq study expansion of parliamentary, economic cooperation

(IRNA) - Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran Mohammad Majid Abbas al-Sheikh conferred here Tuesday with the Head of Majlis National Security and and Foreign Policy Commission Mahmoud Mohammadi on expansion of mutual parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Press Bureau and Public Relations Department of Majlis, at the meeting, Mohammadi referred to deep-rooted historical, cultural and religious commonalties between Iran and Iraq and said further expansion of mutual ties would guarantee the two sides interests against plots by the enemies of Islam, reports Trend.

There are huge untapped potential between the two sides which should be explored, he underlined.

The Islamic Republic of Iran regards restoration of security, stability and developments in Iraq as its own, he said.

Referring to the current economic conditions in Iraq, he called for expansion of economic cooperation and promotion of more border markets.

Underlining the significant role of parliaments, he called for further expansion of parliamentary ties between the two countries.

Highlighting regional and international developments, he called for further exchange of visits and views between officials of the two sides.

The Iraqi ambassador, for his part, expressed satisfaction with the current expansion of relations between Iran and Iraq and said Iraqi officials underlined the need for deepening political, parliamentary and economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He called for implementation of joint development projects between the two countries.
