Ankara Trade Chamber head: Dark days await Turkey

Iran Materials 4 August 2006 11:56 (UTC +04:00)

(Hurriyet) - The head of the Ankara Trade Chamber, Sinan Aygun, has said that "dark days await Turkey," in reference to Turkey's dependance on outside sources for energy. Aygun noted that the next year will be the "year of the generator" for Turkey, asserting that 2007 will bring a crisis in electricity for the private sector, reports Trend.

Noting that a small disagreement between private sector and energy officials had resulted in a blackout recently in 13 different cities across Turkey, Aygun said "It is not possible to solve Turkey's energy problems with a couple of meetings and a couple of concessions. There is nothing left to the energy policy that Turkey follows. Unfortunately, dark days await Turkey."

Aygun also noted that Turkey's electricity is the most expensive in the world, and that the Turkish people would be hurt by rising natural gas costs. He said "While Europeans spend 1% of their incomes on electricity bills, Turkish people spend about 10% of their incomes on the same thing. If this goes up to 15% or 20%, people will shut down the circuits in their homes."
