US to Appoint Special Envoy in Fight Against PKK

Iran Materials 7 August 2006 12:24 (UTC +04:00)

(Zaman) - The US administration is mulling over a plan to appoint a special envoy to coordinate the fight against the PKK terrorist organization.

Persistent pressure and threats from Turkey against the PKK presence in northern Iraq forced the US to take a concrete step, reports Trend.

Turkey threatens to carry out cross-border operations against PKK terrorists hiding in northern Iraq if both the US forces in Iraq and the central Iraqi government fail to root them out.

The US administration is likely to appoint a retired general as a special envoy, a move which will be welcomed by Turkey. The appointment of the envoy is expected to remove bureaucracy between two countries in the fight against the PKK.

Turkey has repeatedly called on the Iraqi government and the US to take swift action against the PKK terrorists hiding in the northern Iraq, due to their frequent border crossings and subsequent attacks.

Turkey had carried out cross-border operations against the PKK in northern Iraq in the past. Some 3500-4000 PKK terrorists are believed to be based in northern Iraq.
