EU Summit Supports Turkey's Role as Energy Hub

(Zaman) - The EU commission is preparing the agenda for the unofficial meeting of EU presidents and prime ministers to be held in Lahti, Finland on Oct. 20. The EU Commission suggested that Turkey meet EU energy standards and policies quickly in order to take advantage of its potential to become a major energy hub.

The document mentioned that Turkey could become an extremely important energy terminal and gain strategic importance for energy security. It was emphasized that Turkey could be integrated with EU energy Acquis Communitaire even before being an EU member, reports Trend. The document suggested Turkey should be accepted to the Treaty Establishing EU/SEE (South East Europe) Energy Community, signed on Oct. 25, 2005, and it could happen before Turkey's EU accession, thereby accelerating Turkey's energy integration.

The document also suggests that construction of a Nabucco pipeline, which will carry natural gas to Europe, and other projects that include the Caspian region.
