Pollution on the Rise in Black Sea

Iran Materials 2 November 2006 13:36 (UTC +04:00)

(zaman) - Extreme changes in the ecosystem of the Black Sea due to pollution have been reported. A decrease in fish stocks has also been noticed.

International initiatives to prevent pollution in the Black Sea, which has 8,350 km of coastline, have proven to be fruitless, reports Trend.

Ten years have passed since Turkey, Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine all the countries that border the sea - signed a strategic operation plan to prevent pollution in the Black Sea, without any results.

Even if different actions and initiatives were on the agenda during International Black Sea Day on Oct. 31, fish stocks in the Black Sea are still being depleted.

One-third of all the pollution created by Europe reaches the Black Sea. The largest source of this pollution is the Danube River.

The river pours about 900 tons of copper pollutants into the Black Sea every year. As a result, every year oxygen levels are further depleted.
