Russia, India call for diplomatic solution of Iran nuke problem

(RIA Novosti) - Russia and India issued a statement Thursday calling for a peaceful and diplomatic solution of the Iranian nuclear problem.

The statement said that UN Resolution 1737, which envisions sanctions against the military nuclear program allegedly being pursued by the Islamic Republic, serves as an important political incentive to Tehran to actively and openly cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Russia and India agreed that a proper and timely response from Tehran would open the way for talks on a long-term comprehensive agreement to ensure future cooperation between Iran and the international community on the issue, reports Trend.

Iran has been at the center of international concerns since January 2006 over its nuclear program, which some countries suspect is geared toward nuclear weapons development. Tehran has consistently denied the claims, and says it needs nuclear power for civilian purposes.
