Iran's Shazand refinery has increased crude oil desulfurization 9 fold in the current year compared to the year before (Iran's calendar year starts on March 21).

Ali Shirazizadeh, managing director of Shazand refinery, said some 450 metric tons of sulfur is being removed from crude oil at the refinery, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on Jan. 21.

Some 17,000 metric tons of sulfur has been stored in the refinery's warehouses, he added.

The purpose of removing the sulfur is to reduce the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions that result from using those fuels in automotive vehicles, aircraft, railroad locomotives, ships, gas or oil burning power plants, residential and industrial furnaces, and other forms of fuel combustion.

Shazand refinery produced over 3.039 billion liters of gasoline conforming to Euro-4 standard in the first seven months of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21 - Oct. 22, 2014).

The refinery also produced 2.78 billion liters of diesel oil conforming to Euro-4 standard in the mentioned period. Some 120 million liters of super gasoline were also produced in the seven-month time span.

Iran needs to import around 10 million liters of gasoline daily to meet its domestic demands.

The country imports only the gasoline conforming to Euro-4 standard, as import of Euro-2 gasoline has been banned.
