Iran may suffer from power shortage in the coming fiscal year corresponding to 2016, said Alireza Ahmadi Yazdi, an official at Iran Power Generation Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR).

He expressed concern over the high consumption of power in the country and predicted that the country will face the shortage of 3,000 megawatt of power in peak hours in the coming summer, Mehr news agency reported Dec. 2.

He also called for saving energy in the country after lifting sanctions as he predicted the consumption of electricity in the country will increase.

Earlier on November 30 Iranian media reported that the country's Energy efficiency Organization (IEEO) has granted several German companies with permissions to build a number of solar power plants with the capacity of producing 1260 megawatt of electricity in the country.

In February, Homayoun Haeri, the managing director of TAVANIR, also said ten percent of Iran's electricity needs will be met by solar and wind power plants by 2022.

He added that Iranian solar and wind power plants will generate 12,000 MW of electricity annually.

Iranians consumed about 219 billion kilowatt hour of power over the last Iranian fiscal year corresponding to 2014.
