Tehran, Iran, December 27

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iranian Ports and Navigation Organization is seeking to introduce a bill within the Sixth Development Plan that would privatize small ports, Mohammad Saidnejad, CEO of the organization said.

Operation of various contractors in one port can create problems in their privatization, the official said, ISNA news agency reported Dec. 27.

Moreover, the privatization will reduce the size and responsibilities of the government, helping it focus on policy-making, investment, and supervision rather than executive affairs.

The official, however, did not point out how many of Iran's 180 small ports will be privatized, or how private entities would qualify for owning the ports.

Iranian government is oversized and poses many problems since it is active in many corners where the private sector could handle jobs.

Iranian Privatization Organization has transferred $150 billion of governmental assets in the past ten years.
